After we have built the model – and sometimes even as we build the model – we start to explore and understand the original system's structure and behavior, test how the system will behave under a variety of conditions, play and compare scenarios, and optimize. After we find our solution, we then can map it to the real world. ![]() This is still more an art than a science. The model is always less complex than the original system. This process assumes abstraction: we omit the details we think are irrelevant and we keep those we think are important. If this is so, we leave the real world and go to the world of models as shown in the figure below. We build a model of a real system: its representation in a modeling language. Modeling is one of the ways to solve real‐world problems. In many cases, we can’t afford to find the right solutions by experimenting with real objects: building, destroying, making changes may be too expensive, dangerous, or just impossible. ![]() “Minions: The Rise of Gru” premieres in US theaters on July 1. Animation also makes it that much easier to appeal to kids’ sillier sides on that score – an advantage over real-life clowns that, alas, simply isn’t executed well enough to make them green (or even yellow) with envy. Mostly, “The Rise of Gru” relies on how visually pleasing and malleable its title characters are, turning them into a kind of slap-happy Three Stooges for our times. “Minions” certainly has to be evaluated in the modest context of what it’s trying to achieve – like fueling fast-food giveaways and toy sales – but even compared to the earlier movies in the franchise, this one feels particularly limited in its scope and ambitions.įor all that, the timing might be right for the movie’s delayed release, which, if true, would provide some welcome news for animation in theaters after Pixar’s “Lightyear” failed to achieve liftoff, commercially speaking. That includes detours to do things like learn kung fu (Michelle Yeoh incongruously pops up, one of the few celebrity voices to register) while sprinkling in callbacks to the earlier movies, a combination that yields fairly widely spaced moments of fun. Gru and the Minions thus take off on parallel tracks, which merely adds to the splintered nature of the story, which is unhelpfully crammed into a less-than-90-minute package. Minions Kevin and Otto, Gru (Steve Carell) and Minions Stuart and Bob in 'Minions: The Rise of Gru.' Universal Pictures “I just need to fly solo on this,” he tells them, bringing tears to their eyes (or eye). Gru thus finds himself caught between the two warring sides, while coming to the conclusion that his loyal sidekicks might not be ready to step up to the big leagues of criminality. ![]() They’re introduced via an Indiana Jones-like action sequence in which they acquire a mystical artifact while abruptly jettisoning their ostensible leader, Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin), who vows revenge. The main problem, and structurally speaking it’s a significant one, is that director Kyle Balda and writer Matthew Fogel throw a bunch of different gags against the wall hoping a few will stick, which they do, while seriously neglecting to maintain the plot.īasically, the premise is that near-12-year-old Gru (voiced by Steve Carell, again) is a budding supervillain fanboy, who yearns for an opportunity to join a sinister group known as the Vicious Six. ![]() Setting the scene as 1976 (it’s the bicentennial!) as the movie begins, the film features a bountiful array of songs from the period, a touch likely to be mostly lost on the target audience, unless they’re inordinately familiar with disco hits and the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” (Of course, dutiful grandparents who take on the challenge of squiring them will be unexpectedly rewarded with a trip down memory lane.) ![]() Loud and colorful, it’s likely to divert smaller kids whose comedic tastes run toward rapid-fire mumbling, pratfalls, the occasional exposed yellow butt and flatulence. Five years after the last “Despicable Me” movie and a dozen years since the first, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” extends the animated franchise without exactly rising to the occasion, delivering a mundane exercise set to an odd 1970s soundtrack. ![]() Īlthough Italy remains firm in the underground, the record market, headed by independent labels such as Portafoglio Lainz or Vibra Records, still gives results. After the dissolution of the Articolo 31 and the abandonment of Neffa from the rap scene, there is a period of fatigue for the Italian scene that awakens with some productions: first of all we must remember Mi fist by Club Dogo, 60 Hz by DJ Shocca, Fabiano detto Inoki by Inoki, Mondo Marcio by Mondo Marcio, and above all Mr. In 2001 the group Sottotono took part in the Sanremo Festival and then broke up shortly after. 2000s Īt the beginning of the new millennium, the Apulian rapper Caparezza achieves success with the album Verità supposte. ![]() Their first single was the Pooh sampling Un attimo ancora (1998) the group had a peak of success in the 2000s, with songs such as Un altro ballo (2004), Vivi per un miracolo (2007) and their biggest hit, Mary (2003). Īt the end of 1999 the Milanese group Sacre Scuole, made up of Jake La Furia, Gué Pequeno and Dargen D'Amico, released the album 3 MC's al cubo. Other important crews and rappers included Bologna's Porzione Massiccia Crew, Sangue Misto (project born from Isola Posse All Star), with their 1994 album SXM, which has influenced all subsequent italian hip hop. In the next few years a dissing battle started between them and the Zero Stress Crew (formed by Sangue Misto and Radical Stuff). In 1996, as they started their performance at Venice's hip hop festival, the others rappers left the stage as a symbolic protest against them. The duo had always been criticized for their connection to the Italian pop-music market. Īrticolo 31, formed by J-Ax and DJ Jad: they started out as a mainly East Coast rap inspired hip hop duo, rapped in two commercials (for big companies such as Fiat and Big Bubble) in 1993. In the early 90s, In 1991, the posse cut movement produced its first underground rap in the italian language, with tracks such as Stop al Panico by Isola Posse All Star, a track against murders and violence in the streets. J-Ax, ex member of the Articolo 31, in a concert. They are known for their left-wing politically and socially charged lyrics. Underground hip hop group Assalti Frontali was founded in Rome in 1988. But DRE and OG never received any payments for recordings. Also that year Marko Von Schoenberg of Stone Castle Records in Italy produced Dre' n OG along with Andre Herring (now known as the King of Art) and Nathaniel Goodwin, with songs such as AK-47, Got Damn, Do Beat, and Spread Your Legs. While Jovanotti was discovered by the famous producer Claudio Cecchetto and quickly reached fame, in the underground Radical Stuff published the first Italian hip hop street video Let's Get Dizzy featuring lo Greco Bros in 1989. The first star to emerge from this scene was Jovanotti, who would rap in otherwise standard italian pop. In the early 80s, hip hop spread to Italy through posse cuts, which were popular in social centers, alternative centers where several left-wing young people regularly meet, and where the extremely influential italian hardcore punk scene was flourishing, from which the Italian posse cut movement inherited its social conscious. The European Music Office's report on Music in Europe claimed that, in general, hip hop from the south of Italy tends to be harder than that from the north. One of the first hip hop crews to catch the attention of the Italian mainstream was Bologna's Isola Posse All Star, then and still today produced by Sandro Orru, who had written the soundtrack to the animated TV series Signor Rossi in the 1970s. Main articles: Order of The Canterbury Tales and List of The Canterbury Tales characters Although this identification has been generally accepted, some scholars have expressed doubts. Mooney, then a professor at the University of Maine and a visiting fellow at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, said she could match Pinkhurst's oath in the Scriveners' Common Paper to the handwriting in the Hengwrt manuscript, which she theorized might have been transcribed from Chaucer's working copy. In 2004, Linne Mooney claimed that she was able to identify the scrivener who worked for Chaucer as an Adam Pinkhurst. Only 10 copies of this edition are known to exist, including one held by the British Library and one held by the Folger Shakespeare Library. The first version of The Canterbury Tales to be published in print was William Caxton's 1476 edition. Another famous example is the Ellesmere Manuscript, a manuscript handwritten by one person with illustrations by several illustrators the tales are put in an order that many later editors have followed for centuries. ![]() The very oldest is probably MS Peniarth 392 D (called " Hengwrt"), written by a scribe shortly after Chaucer's death. The Tales vary in both minor and major ways from manuscript to manuscript many of the minor variations are due to copyists' errors, while it is suggested that in other cases Chaucer both added to his work and revised it as it was being copied and possibly as it was being distributed.Įven the oldest surviving manuscripts of the Tales are not Chaucer's originals. ![]() Fifty-five of these manuscripts are thought to have been originally complete, while 28 are so fragmentary that it is difficult to ascertain whether they were copied individually or as part of a set. This comparison should not be taken as evidence of the Tales' popularity in the century after Chaucer's death, because, according to Derek Pearsall, it is unfair considering that Prick of Conscience had all the benefit of the "preservation of a dogmatic religious subject-matter". There are 84 manuscripts and four incunabula (printed before 1500) editions of the work, which is more than for any other vernacular English literary text with the exception of Prick of Conscience. The question of whether The Canterbury Tales is a finished work has not been answered to date. Although perhaps incomplete, The Canterbury Tales is revered as one of the most important works in English literature. Thomas Becket's shrine (making for a total of about 120 stories). According to the Prologue, Chaucer's intention was to write four stories from the perspective of each pilgrim, two each on the way to and from their ultimate destination, St. In the General Prologue, some 30 pilgrims are introduced. The Canterbury Tales is generally thought to have been incomplete at the end of Chaucer's life. It is unclear to what extent Chaucer was seminal in this evolution of literary preference. English had, however, been used as a literary language centuries before Chaucer's time, and several of Chaucer's contemporaries- John Gower, William Langland, the Pearl Poet, and Julian of Norwich-also wrote major literary works in English. It has been suggested that the greatest contribution of The Canterbury Tales to English literature was the popularisation of the English vernacular in mainstream literature, as opposed to French, Italian or Latin. The prize for this contest is a free meal at the Tabard Inn at Southwark on their return. The tales (mostly written in verse, although some are in prose) are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. It is widely regarded as Chaucer's magnum opus. The Canterbury Tales ( Middle English: Tales of Caunterbury) is a collection of twenty-four stories that runs to over 17,000 lines written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer between 13. |
